Joachim Heinrich Pries the Younger

Joachim Heinrich Pries (also: the Younger ; born September 24, 1747 in Rostock ; † October 24, 1796 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Pries was the son of the Rostock pastor and professor Joachim Heinrich Pries (1714–1763) and his wife Sophia Wendula, b. Petersen (1724-1771). He received his school education from his father and private teachers and at the Güstrow grammar school . From 1764 he studied theology, first at the University of Rostock and from 1767 at the University of Greifswald. Here he obtained his master's degree in 1769. In the following years he gave lectures as a private lecturer. In 1772 the Ribnitz convent elected him their preacher. In 1779 he became pastor at the church of the Heilig-Geist-Hospital . At the same time he was appointed second professor of theology at the University of Rostock. In 1791 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1789/90 he was a member of the Enger Council, 1791/92 and 1794/95 dean of the theological faculty. He was elected rector four times.

In 1775 Pries married Marie Friederike Katharina Stier (1758–1809), daughter of Elbe Customs Commissioner Johann Dietrich Stier from Dömitz . His son Johann Friedrich Pries (1776-1832) also became professor of morality at the philosophical faculty of Rostock University in 1805 and director of the Rostock City School in 1828 . His great-grandson Heinrich Robert Pries (* 1852) was the first pastor at the new Holy Spirit Church in Rostock from 1905 to 1923 .
