Johann Friedrich Winckler (born December 13, 1679 in Wertheim , † October 24, 1738 in Hamburg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Winckler was a son of the Lutheran theologian Johann Winckler , who became chief pastor at St. Michaelis in Hamburg in 1684 . He learned oriental languages ​​from Esdras Edzardus in his hometown and from Hiob Ludolf in Frankfurt aM. From 1695 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Greifswald and in 1697 obtained his master's degree . After study trips through the Netherlands, England and Germany, in 1704 he became professor of oriental languages ​​at the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg. In 1712 he succeeded Franz Wolff as senior pastor at St. Nikolai Church . In addition, in 1730 he took over the position of Senior of the Spiritual Ministry in Hamburg and thus the highest Protestant clergyman in the Hanseatic city. He held both offices until his death.

Winckler continued his oriental studies as a pastor and published edifying writings and sermons.

His son Johann Dietrich Winckler was also a theologian and in 1758 also became chief pastor at the St. Nikolai Church.
