Franz Wolff (born October 13, 1644 in Stralsund , † June 23, 1710 in Hamburg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Franz Wolff was the son of the Stralsund citizen and seafaring merchant Eggert Wolff. According to the father's will, the son should also pursue a commercial career. An apprenticeship position in an Amsterdam trading company had already been procured. Ultimately, however, the father bowed to the son's tendencies towards an academic education. After attending the Stralsund city school, Franz Wolff studied from 1665 first at the University of Rostock and from 1667 at the University of Jena . Wolff received his Master's degree there in 1669 .

Wolff's academic career also began in Jena . From 1669 he worked there as a private lecturer. In 1671 he became an adjunct in the philosophy faculty there .

In 1672 he was appointed full professor of logic by Duke Christian (Ludwig) I at the University of Rostock. Wolff resigned this professorship in 1676, as he took over the pastor's office at Rostock's Marienkirche . Christian Hildebrand was his successor in his professorship .

Franz Wolff married Anna on October 29, 1673, b. Schuckmann (1653–1716), a daughter of the Rostock theology professor Hermann Schuckmann (1616–1686). The marriage had five sons, among them Jakob Christoph Wolff , professor of the Greek language and from 1747 also archdeacon and pastor at the Marienkirche.

In 1680, Wolff was at the University of Wittenberg to Dr. theol. PhD. The following year he was appointed full professor of theology by the Rostock City Council. From 1683 Wolff also held the office of director of the Rostock Spiritual Ministry .

In 1697 Wolff resigned his professorship in Rostock and from then on was chief pastor at St. Nikolaikirche in Hamburg, where he finally died in 1710.
