Johann Georg Fetzer (* July 12, 1845 in Oberhausen ; † July 31, 1909 in Volmarstein ) was a Baptist clergyman and teacher at the Baptist seminary in Hamburg. He published a textbook for the subject pastoral theology he taught . He also published in Baptist magazines. A special concern of his was the work for children and young people as well as the connection between North American and German Baptists.

Life

Johann Fetzer came from a Swabian family of emigrants who settled in Cleveland , North America, in 1857 .

In 1870 Fetzer enrolled at the Baptist Rochester Theological Seminary , where he was a student of the then well-known American theologian Augustus Hopkins Strong and the German-American August Rauschenbusch . In 1876 he returned to Germany. Here he attended the University of Leipzig and studied with the Old Testament scholar Franz Delitzsch and the dogmatists Karl Friedrich August Kahnis and Christoph Ernst Luthardt . Contrary to his original intention to return to the United States , he stayed in Germany and in 1878 became a preacher in the Volmarstein-Grundschöttel Baptist congregation. Here he contributed significantly to the internal structure of the still young community. During his service there, he traveled to the USA in 1880/81 to raise funds for the new building of the Baptist seminary in Hamburg.

Shortly after his return, he was called to teach at the Hamburg seminary, where he primarily devoted himself to pastoral theology . His textbook appeared on this subject in 1908; It was a rare occurrence that a teacher at the seminar had his own textbook printed. In addition to his teaching activities, he was also active as a writer. He wrote numerous articles for the Messenger and the Truth Witness , two periodicals of the German Baptists. In addition, from 1881 to 1885 he published Wort und Werk , the organ of the Baptist Youth Union, and was also the editor of the Führer , a collection of materials for Sunday school workers , for over 14 years .

Fetzer also played a special role as secretary of the German-American mission committee , as chairman of the youth union (1904 to 1909) and as head of the free church Hamburg Sunday School Association , which he held from 1897 to 1909.

Johann Georg Fetzer was married in 1877 to Frida Fetzer (1855–1934), the eldest daughter of the Baptist clergyman August Rauschenbusch. He died during a visit to his former parish Volmarstein-Grundschöttel, in whose cemetery he is also buried.
