Johann Georg Lorenz

Johann Georg Lorenz (born January 25, 1627 in Schmannewitz , † October 13, 1689 in Schulpforte ) was a German educator.

Life

Johann Georg Lorenz was the son of Pastor Johann Lorenz and his wife Anna, daughter of Pastor Winkler from Bucha.

Johann Georg Lorenz initially received lessons from his father until 1640. Then he attended the city school in Oschatz for two years . When the threat of war in the Thirty Years' War increased, he was sent to school in Elbing in 1643 . In Elbing, however, Lorenz found himself among Reformed children who harassed him as a Lutheran.

Therefore he went to Danzig in 1644 to advance his education. However, he did not find a proper living there, so he decided to cross over to Uppsala . However, he was dissuaded from his plan and initially found accommodation with a baron. There he received the news of his seriously ill father in 1646 and returned home in an adventurous way. On the advice of his father, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in 1646 , where he received an electoral scholarship for his studies and was able to complete his studies with an academic master's degree in 1652.

First he took a position as private tutor in Dresden and in November 1655 he was called as the third teacher at the Pforta State School , where he was introduced as Tertius on January 27, 1656 . In 1662 he was promoted to vice rector of the institution and two years later married Elisabeth, daughter of the then rector Johann Kühn . Since teachers at the school were forbidden to marry and the rights were only granted to principals, Lorenz had problems with the Saxon authorities. After much back and forth, on November 2, 1668, he received permission to keep his wife with him.

Ten years later all teachers in Schulpforta were allowed to marry. Eight children were the result of this marriage, with only six daughters surviving. When his father-in-law retired in 1672, Lorenz took over the post of rector of the institution. In the role of Rector, he advocated the abolition of corporal punishment and the abolition of the so-called tying-up (a gift of money from students to teachers), since he was of the opinion that no student should give anything to a teacher. Many students came from poor backgrounds at the time, and it was unreasonable for Lorenz that this payment was made.

His progressive ideas were only implemented much later: tying was not abolished until 1820, and corporal punishment remained a standard measure in school institutions well into the 20th century. He has also increased the number of classes in Schulpforta, where initially only three classes were available for lessons, they were increased to five under his rectorate. However, this idea was only implemented in 1820 when the classes were then taught individually.

Lorenz died of jaundice in 1689 at the age of 62 and was buried on October 17th in the church of the Pforta State School. His son-in-law Johann Gottlob Hartmann took over his role as rector .
