Johann Georg von Arnim (Chamberlain)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Georg von Arnim (born June 3, 1656 - † November 18, 1721 ) was a German entrepreneur, royal Polish and electoral Saxon chamberlain and manor owner and was the progenitor of the Planitz line of his noble family.

Life

Johann Georg von Arnim came from the main line Zichow of the widespread Uckermark noble family of the von Arnim . He was born as the son of the Electorate Chamberlain, secret councilor and war councilor and lieutenant general Wolff Christoph von Arnim and Katharina Dorothea von Hoym.

Together with his two brothers Johann Christian and Wolf Christoph von Arnim, he exchanged at the request of Elector Johann Georg III. of Saxony on March 11, 1689 the paternal manor Pretzsch (Elbe) against the manor Planitz and two other chamber estates. Already at that time it was determined that Johann Georg von Arnim should receive Planitz. In Planitz he built the new palace and manor buildings, which were now grouped together in a square, in the years from 1691 to 1712. For the sake of convenience, however, he later lived mostly at Gröba Castle , as this was closer to the royal seat of the Electorate of Saxony, Dresden , where he was appointed chamberlain, than Planitz. He had made himself unpopular for a time in Planitz and the surrounding towns of Cainsdorf and Wilkau due to the pressure of children to work and excessive demands for labor. Johann Georg von Arnim became known nationwide primarily through the start of hard coal mining in the Zwickau district, which was to become one of the main employers in the region of the Erzgebirge foreland for the next two centuries .
