Johann Gerhard König (also Koenig or Kønig and John Gerhard ) (born November 29, 1728 in Lemenen ( Ungerhof ) near Kreutzburg , Polish-Livonia ; † June 26, 1785 in Jaganathpatam , Andhra Pradesh , India) was a Baltic German botanist and doctor . Its botanical author abbreviation is " J.Koenig "; earlier the abbreviation " JGKoenig " was also in use.

Live and act

König studied at the University of Copenhagen . He went on research trips to Southeast Asia ; from 1773 he stayed in India. König corresponded with Carl von Linnaeus .

He collaborated on the work Observationes botanicae by the Swedish botanist Anders Jahan Retzius (Fasc. 3, 1783 and Fasc. 6, 1791). König described many plants that are used in Ayurveda .

The diary of his journey from India through Siam to Malacca , which only appeared in print in 1894, is also a treasure trove for historians. It is one of the few first-hand reports from foreigners about Siam at the time of King Taksin . Among other things, JG König reports on the destruction and looting in Ayutthaya , which, as the official Thai historiography still says, was not solely attributable to the Burmese , but rather to a considerable part of their own population. He thus confirmed contemporary reports from missionaries who had witnessed the taking of Ayutthaya themselves.

In 1772 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1784 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

Honors

The plant genus Koenigia L. from the knotweed family (Polygonaceae) has been named in his honor. The species Bergera koenigii L. was also named after him.
