Johann Gottfried Haas (* 1737 in Gelenau ; † April 17, 1815 in Schneeberg (Erzgebirge) ) was a German classical philologist, Hebraist , Romanist , grammarian and lexicographer .

life and work

Haas, the son of a master mason who fell victim to a violent crime, grew up in poverty, attended the city school in Chemnitz and studied at the University of Leipzig . Then he was private tutor in Grünhain , vice-principal in Marienberg and from 1775 in the same function at the city school of Schneeberg in the Ore Mountains . Among his numerous school publications, introductions to Hebrew and extensive bilingual dictionaries with Latin, Greek and French stand out. His French dictionary crossed the entire 19th century under the pseudonym "MA Thibaut" - probably chosen by the publisher after his death - and had 150 editions. Also noteworthy is the functionalization of French learning published in 1794 for learning Italian based on it.
