In 1832 Heinrich Blohm was appointed manager of the city of Hanover . In 1836 Blohm received the special task of conducting preliminary investigations from the General Directorate of Hydraulic Engineering in Hanover to facilitate communication between Hamburg and Harburg on the Elbe . He was also a member of the commission to examine the connection's steamers for safety, speed and comfort. In 1841 he published a book on the basis of his studies, which the Harburg mayor August Bahr should use as evidence for the construction of a seaport . The work done by Heinrich Blohm contributed to the fact that the Hanoverian estates gave up their objections to the expansion of the Harburg harbor and in 1844 the royal government approved 485,000 thalers for the construction of the Harburg tidal port . The opening of the port was announced on April 15, 1849. Blohm's work had strongly encouraged Harburg's development as it grew into industrialization . A few months after the inauguration of the Harburg port facility, Blohm received honorary citizenship of the city of Harburg on the Elbe. In 1851 Blohm took over the management of dyke construction on the island of Wilhelmsburg . A small temple-like central building made of sandstone is reminiscent of Johann Heinrich Blohm in the old Harburg cemetery .

Honors

In 1867, Blohmstrasse in Harburg was named after him. He was a knight of the Royal Guelph Order and a royal Hanoverian Baurath.
