Johann Heinrich von Spreckelsen (born September 10, 1691 in Hamburg , † June 1, 1764 ibid) was a German lawyer and Hamburg council secretary.

Origin and family

Johann Heinrich was born as the son of the Hamburg lawyer Peter von Spreckelsen (1642–1724) from his second marriage to Margaretha Wilckens (1652–1728).

The Hamburg councilor Johann von Spreckelsen (1607–1684) was his grandfather. His older sister Anna Catharina von Spreckelsen (1681–1743) was married to councilor Johann Rumpff (1665–1718). A son of his younger brother Jürgen von Spreckelsen (1695–1739), Johann Peter von Spreckelsen (1722–1795), also became a councilor.

On April 21, 1721 Spreckelsen married Sara Poppe (1698–1769), daughter of Frans Poppe (1648–1718) and sister of the Hamburg mayor Cornelius Poppe (1691–1768) and the elderly Lorenz Poppe (1692–1760) and Daniel Poppe ( 1707-1774). The marriage to Sara gave birth to 10 children.

Live and act

After finishing school, Spreckelsen studied law and graduated from the University of Orléans in 1719 with a degree in both canonical and secular law .

After his studies, he settled in Hamburg as a lawyer and was elected council secretary on June 14, 1747.

Spreckelsen had the first private botanical garden built in Hamburg , which the natural scientist Carl von Linné had also visited in 1735. Spreckelsen had sent the first specimens of the Jacob's lilies from his garden to the botanist Lorenz Heister , whereupon these were given the generic name Sprekelia after him in 1755 . On January 12, 1731 he became a member ( matriculation no. 421 ) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Antonius Castor .
