Johann von Spreckelsen (councilor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann von Spreckelsen (born May 20, 1607 in Hamburg ; † June 6, 1684 there ) was a German merchant and a Hamburg councilor .

Origin and family

Spreckelsen was a son of the senior elder in the parish of Sankt Katharinen Peter von Spreckelsen († 1630) and his wife Anna Beckmann (1582-1648), daughter of the senior elder in the parish of Sankt Petri Lucas Beckmann (1546-1614) .

On October 9, 1637, he married Catharina Schele (1611–1666), daughter of councilor Wolder Schele (1579–1649). Of his sons, Wolder († 1695), Hartwig († 1708) and Peter (1642–1724) became lawyers in Hamburg. Hartwig also worked as a judge at the lower court .

Live and act

Spreckelsen was a merchant in Hamburg when he was elected councilor in 1660. When the Hamburg citizenship demanded in 1666 that witnesses have to swear their testimony in court, Spreckelsen, who had been praetor since 1665, refused to "dance to the whistle of unsolicited minstrels". The citizens thereupon demanded his removal as councilor. The council refused the citizenship this request. The mediation attempts of the imperial commissioner Johann Gabriel Freiherr von Selb were also unsuccessful, and so on April 24, 1667 the council agreed to the dismissal of Spreckelsen. Spreckelsen went to the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Speyer and sued the Hamburg Council, whereupon Spreckelsen was sued in Hamburg courts. His published writings refer to this process. He died in 1684 before the trial was completed. However, his heirs did not continue the process.

In 1676, Emperor Leopold I raised Spreckelsen to the nobility.
