Johann Hortzschansky

Johann Hortzschansky ( Upper Sorbian Jan Hórčanski ; born May 19, 1722 in Breitendorf , † December 18, 1799 in Görlitz ) was a Sorbian high school teacher and historian.

Life

Hortzschansky attended grammar schools in Löbau and Bautzen and enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on May 18, 1743 . He later became a private tutor for several families before he became a teacher at the grammar school in Görlitz in 1759. There he found a job in 1765 as a sub-librarian at the council library and in 1768 became the first teacher at the grammar school. He wrote many writings on the history of Görlitz and the Wendish language . In this he also translated some songs that were incorporated into the Wendish hymnbook. He also had 600 occasional poems appear in print.
