Johann I. (Cammin)
Johann von Sachsen-Lauenburg (* around 1318 , † 1370 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman. As Johann I he was Bishop of Cammin .
He was the youngest son of Duke Erich I of Saxony-Lauenburg and his wife Elisabeth of Pomerania, a daughter of Duke Bogislaw IV of Pomerania. Intended for the clergy, he studied at the University of Montpellier in France. He acquired benefices at the Cologne Cathedral Chapter and the Minden Cathedral Chapter as well as the archdeaconate in Demmin in the Duchy of Pomerania .
In 1343 he was appointed by Pope Clement VI. appointed Bishop of Cammin . During his tenure, among other things, he carried out the diocesan synod of 1352, the extensive statutes of which have been handed down in full. In addition, in 1345 he renewed the curia order of the Kolberg cathedral chapter .
He lost the possession of the town and country of Cammin in 1355. Bishop Konrad IV succeeded in buying the town and country of Cammin from the dukes in 1321, but with the dukes' right of repurchase. This right of repurchase has now been exercised. In 1356, Bishop Johann I signed a contract with Duke Bogislaw V , according to which the diocese was placed under ducal protection and according to which the election of bishops and canons of the Camminer cathedral monastery was made dependent on the consent of the duke.
In relation to the neighboring Archdiocese of Gniezno there was also a dispute under Bishop Johann I. It was about the collection of St. Peter's penny , which was collected in the ecclesiastical province of Gniezno and passed on to the Pope. The archbishops of Gniezno demanded that he be raised in the diocese of Cammin. Pope Clement VI even commissioned Bishop Johann I in 1343 to collect the Peterspfennig in the diocese of Cammin and to forward it to Gniezno. Bishop Johann I argued against it, because the diocese of Cammin was exempt , i.e. directly subordinate to the Pope. In 1345 the Pope revoked his order.
During his tenure in 1357 Bishop Johann von Bir Seba and from 1359 Goswinus Grope , Bishop of Evelone, were auxiliary bishops .
Bishop Johann I died in 1370 and was buried in the Camminer Cathedral . His gravestone has been preserved to this day, only the metal inlays are missing.
