Johann Jakob Hess (born October 21, 1741 in Zurich ; † May 29, 1828 in Zurich) was a Swiss theologian .
Life
Johann Jakob Hess' father was the town watchmaker Salomon Hess. He studied at the Collegium Carolinum Zurich from 1755 to 1760 , followed by his ordination as Verbi divini minister. In 1767 he married Anna Maria Schinz from Embrach , was appointed deacon at the Fraumünster in 1777 , and in 1795 he was senior pastor and antist of the clergy of the canton of Zurich .
As an antistes, Hess was in office from 1795 to 1828 and is considered a diplomatic church representative of the class (canton) of Zurich , especially during the Helvetic Republic. Johann Jakob Hess founded the Zurich Bible Society and was a friend and competitor of Johann Caspar Lavater .
He is known as the real pioneer for the literature of the life of Jesus through his story of the last three years of Jesus' life (Zurich 1768) and the life story of Jesus (8th edition, that. 1823), which " seemed to be addicted to innovation to the contemporaries, to the later old believers, but with its quietly mediating presentation it satisfied the pious need in Germany for half a century ».
Letters about the Revelation of St. John (Zurich 1844) were published from his estate .
