Johann Jakob Hofmann (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Jakob Hofmann (also Jacob , also Hoffmann ; born September 11, 1635 in Basel ; † May 10, 1706 ibid) was a Swiss theologian , historian and lexicographer .

Life

His father was the high school teacher Johann Jakob Hofmann. He studied at the University of Basel , had a master's degree at the age of 15 and passed the theology exam there in 1655 . He gave private tuition until he received the professorship of the Greek language at the University of Basel in 1667 , which he exchanged for the professorship of history in 1683. In 1685 he achieved his doctorate in theology.

Services

His greatest achievement is editing the Lexicon Universale , which has kept him busy for decades. It is the first lexicon to be called the universal lexicon , and one of the last scholarly lexicons in Latin . The first edition is an adaptation of the Dictionarium historicum, geographicum, poeticum (Geneva 1596) by Charles Estienne . Hofmann's historical works had no lasting effect. The little theological treatises are of little importance.
