Johann Jakob Sell (born January 11, 1754 in Stettin ; † March 23, 1816 there ) was a German schoolmaster and historian .

Sell received his education at the Szczecin Council School. From Easter 1771 he attended the University of Halle and took philological subjects there in order to prepare for the teaching post. After completing his studies, he initially took a position as a private tutor for a family on Rügen . In 1776 he received a teaching post at the Stettiner Ratsschule, where he soon became deputy rector. In this position he worked successfully for several years. In May 1783 he became a high school professor for history and rhetoric at the Royal High School in Stettin , which had assumed the character of an academy under the Swedish rule. Sell eventually became rector of the grammar school, which in 1805 merged with the Stettiner Ratsschule to form the United Royal and City grammar school. He was a Freemason and belonged to the Stettiner St. Johannis Lodge to the three circles , as their master of ceremonies he served from 1787–1795.

Sell was the head of the city council in Stettin from 1809 .

Sell published writings on Pomeranian history. His three-part book History of the Duchy of Pomerania (Berlin 1819–1820) came out only after his death. The first part of the latter book did not consistently withstand the criticism and was soon considered to be partly unreliable. The second and third parts, however, were still fully usable.
