Vogel was born in 1660 as the son of the Leipzig merchant Nicolaus Vogel. After receiving private lessons, he attended the Nikolaischule in his hometown from 1671 . From 1678 he studied medicine at Leipzig University , but soon turned to theology and philosophy. In 1680 he was a Baccalaureus and the next year a master's degree in philosophy. His disputation De Insignibus Lipsiae on the Leipzig city arms was published in 1683, after which he held theological lectures at Leipzig University.

In 1686 he received the post of deacon in Taucha near Leipzig, in 1697 he took over the pastoral office in neighboring Panitzsch , which he held until his death. During this time the Panitzsch church was completely rebuilt and designed in the Baroque style.

In addition to his pastoral work, he dealt intensively with historical research on Leipzig, which was first reflected in detail in the Leipzig Chronicon published around 1710 and later in the Leipzig History Book or Annales published in 1714 . The Chronicon was planned as an extremely ambitious and comprehensive city history, but remained only of a fragmentary nature. In the latter book - published in the second edition in 1756 due to its great success - the history of Leipzig and partly Saxony is presented in chronological form from the year 661 on in detail on around 1100 pages and provided with indexes. The Annales are still considered the most comprehensive chronological representation of Leipzig's history up to the 18th century. Another well-known work is the biography of the indulgence dealer Johann Tetzel from the year 1717. Vogel also did intensive genealogical research on Leipzig families and church, university and city personalities of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Vogel's handwritten and printed estate is in the Leipzig University Library , special editions of the Annales , which have been supplemented by an unknown hand with up to 1000 contemporary and partially colored copper engravings to match the respective events, are in the Leipzig City History Museum (multiple volumes) and in the University library Leipzig verifiable.
