John was the son of the Hamburg preacher Johann John (1772–1813). He initially received private lessons in Hamburg and then went to high school in Stade . He attended this until his father's death. He then returned to Hamburg and graduated from the Johanneum's school of scholars . There he met Otto Wolters , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. Both moved to the Hamburg Academic Gymnasium in 1815 and a year later to the University of Göttingen . In 1817, on Johann Gottfried Gurlitt's advice , they continued their studies at the University of Leipzig . In the meantime, Wolters went on to Jena, while John stayed in Leipzig. In 1819 both returned to Hamburg.

However, John was not yet adequately prepared for the preaching profession. He therefore went to Oldesloe as a teacher for another year and continued his theological studies during this time. At Easter 1820 he returned to Hamburg and on November 10, 1820 was a candidate for preacher at the Hamburg Ministry . In the following years he hired himself as a preacher and private teacher . On January 28, 1827 he was elected deacon of the main church of St. Peter and ordained March 6. He turned down the election as senior pastor in 1834 because it was incompatible with the preparation of the confirmands.

John, who was considered a popular preacher, was involved in the preparation of the hymn book introduced on January 1, 1843. On his anniversary in office he was awarded an honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Hc ) by the theological faculty of Göttingen University . In the last years of his life he was seriously ill, which is why he had to limit his work more and more.

The main pastors of St. Petri / Pastors of St. Petri of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, Ohlsdorf Cemetery , are reminded of Johann John on the double grave plate .
