Johann Josef Mildner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Josef Mildner (born September 22, 1765 in Kaltenberg (Studená), Bohemia; † February 11, 1808 in Gutenbrunn in the Waldviertel) was a glassblower and glass artist.

Life

Johann Josef Mildner was born in 1765 as the son of the glass cutter Franz Xaver Mildner in Kaltenberg in the Bohemian Giant Mountains , today's Studená in the Czech Republic. Economic pressures forced the Mildner family to leave their home. This is despite the fact that the Bohemian / Silesian border region was a center of glass art in the 18th century. In 1779 they moved to Gutenbrunn in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel , while Johann Mildner did not settle here until 1784. It is believed that he had acquired the various techniques of glass decoration in the past few years. While his father and the brothers worked specifically as glass grinders for the glass works of Joseph Edler von Fürnberg, Johann Mildner was responsible for decorating and labeling the glasses. He developed his own method for painting on gold and silver backgrounds. On the other hand, polishing and cutting were the tasks of the family.

Johann Josef Mildner died of pneumonia in 1808 at the age of 43 and was buried in Martinsberg.

On the 200th anniversary of Mildner's death, a Mildner Museum was opened in Gutenbrunn's office and an anniversary exhibition was shown.

Mildner's specialty was the "Mildner glasses", goblets or goblets made in the style of intermediate gold glasses . consisting of two precisely fitting glass layers, between which a gold leaf was inserted and etched with the desired design. His motifs consisted of portraits, monograms or coats of arms and, more rarely, allegories or depictions of saints. Occasionally he engraved a poem on the back of the locket. He often signed his works with "Mildner fec. À Gutenbrunn" (Mildner made it ...) and an indication of the year. Dated works from 1787 to 1807 document his work. Examples of his glass art can now be found in all major public glass collections around the world, as well as in numerous private collections.
