Johann Ludwig Betulius (born August 25, 1587 in Eger , † May 1647 in Untersteinbach ) was a German Lutheran theologian , pastor and preacher .

Life

Johann Ludwig Betulius was born in Eger as Johann Ludewig Birgkner (= Birkner, later Latinized to Betulius). His father was the cantor in Eger and later pastor in Frauenreuth Daniel Betulius , his mother the Eger councilor's daughter Christina Codmann. After studying theology, he moved to Neukirchberg , but left Bohemia in 1627/1628 due to the Counter Reformation . After he was briefly in Goldbach, he found a job as court preacher in Waldenburg . As this he can be proven from 1632. At the end of 1634 his colleagues advised him to flee because of the plague , and finally he and his sick wife and seven children fled from Goldbach to Hall. In 1635 he came to Heilbronn after the Catholics had confiscated his money and property. Then he became pastor of Untersteinbach. It should be noted that Betulius is the uncle of Sigmund von Birken and had four wives. With Anna Maria Hofstetter, the daughter of the pastor and superintendent in Eger , Johann Hofstetter (also Hoffsteter), he married there on January 8, 1617. She died of the plague in Waldenburg on October 27, 1634, the five children also died on the same day. Two children survived from the first marriage. On April 24, 1635, he married Anna Abel from Velberg in Waldenburg , who in turn died on October 30, 1636 in Untersteinbach. It was there that he married Margarethe Seebach from Michelbach on May 2, 1637 , who had already survived two pastors. After she died on March 10, 1641, he married Katharina Eisenmerger from Hall on July 27 of the same year in Untersteinbach. In May 1647 Betulius, who had also been superintendent , died in Untersteinbach.
