Johann Ludwig Merz

Johann Ludwig Merz (born October 30, 1772 in Herisau ; † February 16, 1851 in ibid ; authorized to live there ) was a Swiss colonel , entrepreneur and cartographer from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Ludwig Merz was a son of Hans Jakob Merz, model engraver. He was a nephew of Johann Georg Merz . In 1846 he married Johanna Elise Tanner, daughter of Johann Jakob Tanner, military captain . He entered into a second marriage with Sophie Müller, daughter of Johan Jakob Müller, businessman and councilor. From 1790 to 1796 he was a company commander in Sardinian-Piedmontese services . From 1799 to 1815 he took part in various military operations of the federal army . Merz rejected the election as federal colonel in 1813. In 1817, however, he accepted the position of colonel of the Piedmontese army and at the same time retired .

In 1806 Merz took over the trading business of an uncle in Herisau, where he had been an accountant from 1796 . From 1822 to 1823 he served as councilor. Working part-time with cartography , Merz took over the mapping of the Appenzell region for the Dufour map from 1819 to 1831 . He also made meteorological records from 1827 to 1841 .
