Johann Georg Merz
Johann Georg Merz (born October 8, 1761 in Herisau ; † July 12, 1830 in ibid ; authorized to live there ) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur, mayor and member of the small council from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .
Life
Johann Georg Merz was a son of Bartholome Merz, butcher and landlord zum Schäfli , and Anna Katharina Leugenhager. He married Anna Margreth Peter. He entered into a second marriage with Anna Katharina Nänny.
Merz completed a red tanner apprenticeship in Lindau ( Bavaria ). After three years of wandering through Germany and Holland , he and his brother took over his father's business in 1781. After separating from his brother in 1782, Merz ran the Gasthaus zur Krone in Herisau. He attached a wine trade to this.
In 1795 he successfully entered the textile publishing business . In 1798 he was Rittmeister of the Herisau cavalry . From 1798 to 1799 he was an agent of the government instead holder of the canton Säntis . In the years 1799 to 1802 he was the deputy governor of the Herisau district . From 1805 to 1816 he held the office of mayor in Herisau. From 1816 to 1818 he served as the Ausserrhoder state ensign, 1818/1819 as the state cap master and from 1819 to 1820 as the state governor. Merz played a key role in the revision of the land register . Their vehement rejection by the rural community forced him to resign in 1820.
