Johann Münzberg

Johann Münzberg (born August 3, 1799 in Schönlinde , Bohemia ; † September 1, 1878 in Libotschan Castle , Bohemia) was a German textile manufacturer. The textile works Johann Münzberg & Co., which he had founded with his brother, were an important company in the branch in Bohemia in 1876.

Life

Münzberg was born as the son of the Bohemian textile manufacturer Johann Gottfried Lorenz Münzberg (1758-1824) in Schönlinde. He did an apprenticeship as a weaver and initially worked in the factory for the production of calico printing , thread and canvas, which his father had founded in 1786. He gained experience as a journeyman and businessman in Rumburg and Georgswalde . In 1828 he and his brother Josef Münzberg (1794–1867) founded a cotton mill in Theresienau in the old town near Tetschen . It developed into an important group of companies. After further founding and takeovers, the factories under the name Textilwerke Johann Münzberg & Co. had over 60,000 spindles in 1876 and were thus one of the most important companies in the branch in Bohemia. Münzberg was called the spinner king.

Münzberg also founded a brewery on his estate in Libotschan and participated in the establishment of a sugar factory in Saaz . He campaigned for the construction of a bridge over the Elbe in Tetschen to connect the city with the new railway line from Dresden to Prague. The Chain Bridge was opened in 1855 as the Empress Elisabeth Bridge . Münzberg sponsored the construction of the Bohemian Northern Railway and the establishment of schools and a savings bank in Tetschen. In 1848 and 1849 he was authorized to print emergency money .

Münzberg's descendants continued to run the textile companies, but many of them became unprofitable and were therefore closed or taken over by Czech entrepreneurs. The factory in Bensen -Eleonorenhain remained in family ownership until 1945.

Münzberg was awarded the Franz Joseph Order .
