Johann Nicolaus Niclas
Johann Nicolaus Niclas (born April 5, 1733 in Graefenwarth , † August 22, 1808 in Lüneburg ) was a German classical philologist and book collector.
Life
After attending school in Schleiz and the Ruthenum in Gera, Niclas studied from 1753 at the University of Göttingen , where he was supported by Johann Matthias Gesner . In 1760 he became a collaborator at the Ilfeld convent school . In 1770 he became rector of the Michaelis School in Lüneburg as the successor to Johann Michael Heinze, who was appointed to Weimar .
Niclas was a bibliophile who, during his professional life in Lüneburg, compiled a private library of more than 9,000 volumes. He sold this in 1790, subject to lifelong usufruct, for 2000 thalers to the Knight's Academy (Lüneburg) . In 1806 he came under guardianship because of his deteriorating mental state.
