from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Nikolaus Gerlach (also: Johann Nicolaus Gerlach ; * around 1696 in Magdeburg ; † September 1767 in Dresden ) was a German bookseller , publisher and printer .

Life

Johann Nicolaus Gerlach, born in Magdeburg at the end of the 17th century, was the only son of the publisher of the same name, Johann Nikolaus Gerlach senior, who worked there . After his father's death, his widow married Christoph Seidel , now the stepfather of Johann Nicolaus Gerlach junior. As an adult, Gerlach emigrated to Dresden, where he founded his own business, which he initially ran as a company from 1720 to 1742 with the company name Johann Christoph Zimmermann & Johann Nikolaus Gerlach and the addition of the seat in Dresden. In addition to the actual book trade and publishing house, the company also included an affiliated printing company.

With his wife, Gerlach had the son and legal successor of the Dresden company Johann Samuel Gerlach . After taking over the business shares of his initial partner , Gerlach initially traded alone from 1739, and from 1762 after his son joined the company, which is now run as a family company, as Johann Nikolaus Gerlach & Sohn . After Gerlach's death in 1767, the company was apparently only renamed in 1769 to Johann Nikolaus Gerlach Widow and Son . Other names included Gerlachische Buchhandlung , Gerlachsche Schriften or Gerlachsche Buchhandlung .

The company was still family-owned in the 19th century. In 1851 Johann Samuel Gerlach registered “ Concurs ”; the proceeds from this were donated to the Annenkirche in Dresden and the Neustadt-Dresden city court .
