Johann Otto Henckel

Johann Otto Henckel (born November 22, 1636 in Marburg , † December 21, 1682 in Rinteln ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the princely Hessian-Kassler superintendent and pastor in Marburg Otto Henckel (1601–1670) and his wife Christina Erhard had attended the school in his hometown and in 1647 took up the pedagogy there. Since the pedagogy was shut down during the war, he and his brother received lessons from private tutors. In 1650 he moved to the University of Giessen , where he held lectures at the philosophical faculty from 1652.

For a while he continued his studies at the University of Marburg and returned to Gießen, where he obtained the degree of master's degree on December 16, 1658 . He then continued his lectures in Marburg, in 1661 came to the University of Rinteln , where he became an associate professor of philosophy in 1662 and was promoted to professor of metaphysics in 1664. In 1666 he became professor of logic and associate professor of theology, received his doctorate in theology on August 15 and became full professor of theology on July 31, 1669, maintaining his professorships in logic and metaphysics until 1674.

In 1674 he rose to become the first professor of theology in Rinteln and became consistorial advisor and superintendent of the county of Schaumburg . Henckel also took part in the organizational tasks of the university in Rinteln. In 1660 and 1674 he was dean of the philosophical faculty and five times rector of the alma mater.

He died of dropsy as rector on December 21, 1682 in Rinteln. The body was buried on January 3, 1683 in the town church of Rinteln.

His marriage to Sophia, the daughter of the schaumburg-Lippe council and land rent master Anton Dolle, on September 2, 1667, remained childless.
