Johann Peter Weidmann
Johann Peter Weidmann (born July 27, 1751 in Zülpich ; † June 23, 1819 in Mainz ) was a German doctor and university professor .
Life
Weidmann's early training is unknown. Around 1769 he was enrolled at the University of Cologne . He stayed there to study philosophy until about 1773. He probably graduated from Cologne as Dr. phil. finished his studies. On November 26, 1773 he was enrolled at the University of Würzburg , where he then studied medicine. His doctorate as Dr. med. took place in 1779 with the dissertation comparatio inter sectionem caesaream et dissectionem cartilaginis et ligamentorum pubis, in partu ob pelvis angustiam impossibili suscipiendas under Carl Caspar von Siebold . He then supplemented his studies with study visits to the University of Strasbourg , Paris and London .
On December 23, 1782 Weidmann received a reputation as a full professor of anatomy, surgery and obstetrics at the University of Mainz . He also became director of the university maternity hospital. On March 29, 1784 he became a member of the medical faculty. In the years 1786 to 1789 and from 1795 to 1797 he held the office of dean of the medical faculty. Even after the university was closed by the French in 1798, he stayed in Mainz.
In 1806, Weidmann opened a maternity hospital as director in the former Altmünster Abbey in Mainz, where he had also moved to live. He acted as director of the institution until 1812.
