Johann Philipp Samuel Schmidt
Johann Philipp Samuel Schmidt (born September 8, 1779 in Königsberg ; † May 9, 1853 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer , journalist , music writer and composer .
Life
Schmidt was brought up musically at an early age in his parents' house, and Mozart was his special love . He played early in the theater orchestra and worked as a répétiteur and choirmaster. From 1796 he studied law, but in 1798 he went on a trip to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Munich and Vienna, where he also visited Joseph Haydn. In 1801 he was employed as a trainee lawyer in Berlin, became an assessor in 1804 and entered the Singakademie and became a member of Zelter's Liedertafel (1809). He later made a living by taking piano lessons. In 1811 he was employed by the Prussian Sea Trade, but made a name for himself primarily as a music critic. He worked for the Haude & Spenersche Zeitung for over 30 years.
In addition to his compositions, he has arranged 38 piano reductions for symphonies, quintets and quartets, as well as for Faust by Anton Radziwiłł . He also wrote a lot of church music and other vocal works, as well as instrumental music and various hymns, songs and chants.
