Johann Rudolph Engau

Johann Rudolph Engau (born April 28, 1708 in Erfurt , † January 18, 1755 in Jena ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Johann Rudolph was the son of the iron merchant Caspar Engau and his wife Brigitte Elisabeth Nagel. After initial private lessons, he attended the business school in Erfurt and the Ratsgymnasium in his native town . After the death of his father, his mother moved to Weimar, where he attended the high school there from 1720, which was under the direction of the then rector Johann Christoph Kiesewetter (born March 15, 1666 in Breitenbach; † May 27, 1744 in Weimar). In 1726 he moved to the University of Jena where he initially completed philosophical studies with Johann Heinrich Kromayer (born July 19, 1689 in Schulpforta, † July 19, 1734 in Jena), Johann Jacob Syrbius and Georg Erhard Hamberger . Then he turned to the study of law, where he lectured by Johann Tobias Hofmann (born June 13, 1693 in Gotha, † 1742 in Altenburg), Wilhelm Hieronymus Brückner , Johann Salomon Brunnquell and Christian Gottlieb Buder (born October 29, 1693 in Kittlitz; December 9, 1763 in Jena).

In 1734 he received his doctorate in law, became an associate professor in law in 1738 and a full professor in 1740, as well as an associate professor of the Schöppenstuhl. In 1743 he took over the professorship of the institutes and became an associate member of the Jena regional court. In 1746 he became professor of the novellas and the code as well as a senior of the law faculty. In 1748 he was appointed court counselor of Saxe-Weimar. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the university. He was dean of the law faculty several times and in the summer semesters 1745 and 1749 rector of the alma mater . Engau, who had given lectures on martial law, German law, canon law and criminal law, contributed to textbooks on German criminal and church law.
