Johann Sigismund Friedrich Schindler

Johann Sigismund Friedrich Schindler (Lower Sorbian Jan Zygmunt Bjedrich Šyndlaŕ ; born June 8, 1758 in Werben , Niederlausitz ; † August 19, 1841 in Peitz ) was a Lower Sorbian pastor and author of several theological writings and songs.

Life

Friedrich Schindler was born in Werben as the son of a pastor. After an apprenticeship in bookbinding, he attended high school in Cottbus from 1772. From 1779 he studied Protestant theology in Halle and then worked as a private tutor in Illmersdorf .

From 1787 Schindler was a teacher for religion and languages ​​at the grammar school in Cottbus and represented his father in his pastor in Werben. His first theological writings and songs have been preserved from 1791. In 1796 he was appointed pastor in Peitz. Pastor Schindler was committed to promoting and preserving the Wendish language throughout his life. In 1807 he protested against the intention to push back the Wendish language in the church and in public by the new Saxon authorities in the Cottbus rulership. In 1821 he published a revised Wendish New Testament, and in 1824 an Old Testament was printed in its revision.

In 1839 Pastor Schindler retired.
