Johann Sigmund Deybel von Hammerau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Sigmund Deybel von Hammerau (Polish Jan Zygmunt Deybel von Hammerau, * around 1685 - 1690 in Saxony ; † 1752 ), was a Saxon Rococo architect who worked mainly in Poland - since 1719. Deybel was a major in the Polish artillery. His son Christian Gottfried Deybel de Hammerau (1725–1798) became a general in the Polish army.

From 1721 Deybel worked in the Warsaw Office for Royal Buildings, from 1725 as court architect of King Augustus the Strong . As an officer of the mounted artillery he was promoted to captain in 1736 and to major in 1746.

His buildings show a clear influence of French architecture, probably based on the copperplate engravings by Pierre-Jean Mariette from the volume L'architecture française (3rd vol., 1727–1737).

Among his students were the architect Ephraim Schröger and the painter Zygmunt Vogel .
