Johann Theodor Schultz (* 1817 in Marne ; † April 29, 1893 in Uhlenhorst ) was a German painter and teacher .

Life

He was born in Marne Holstein and married on December 8, 1844 in Uetersen Anna Rathgen († 1903), a daughter of Joachim Oelkers, who was admitted to the Uetersen Monastery for the education and training of Countess Luise von Rantzau-Breitenburg . Johann Theodor Schultz founded the International Higher Teaching and Education Institute and Commercial School on Pastorendamm in Uetersen , a private educational institution for boys ( Realgymnasium ), in which Schultz, as a gifted teacher, anticipated the idea of the rural education home through a curriculum that was highly unusual at the time. Schultze taught both peasant and bourgeois sons from Uetersen and the Holstein Elbmarschen , as well as the male offspring of Hamburg merchants and from overseas, where the good reputation of this boarding school had spread from the Hanseatic city.

Johann Theodor Schultz was considered to be a very self-absorbed person who always strived for “something higher” and also behaved that way. He tried to set the tone in Uetersen and was supported by the older women of the monastery, who sat as councilors in the council of the Uetersen town hall. His greatest adversary was the mayor of Uetersen, Heinrich Meßtorff, who brought him back down to earth.

Schultz then sold the teaching institute to the teacher Heinrich Drews, Arthur Drews ' father , and became a painter. But Drews only kept the “boys' institute” for a few years and sold it to the pedagogue and theologian August Ramm, who then helped the private school gain an even higher reputation. The building was in the focus of public interest several times in the 19th century and consisted of two connected building parts, which were converted into residential houses and separated at the end of the 20th century.

As a painter he painted so-called "illustrative pictures for higher schools" and was active as a landscape and portrait painter. Years later he made a name for himself as an art critic for the Hamburg Correspondents . Schultz was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .
