Johann Thornton
Johann Edler von Thornton (birth name John Thornton; * 1771 in Manchester , † March 28, 1847 in Baden near Vienna ) was an English mechanic and Austrian manufacturer and director ( industrialist ), who was ennobled in 1812 (Edler von Thornton).
Life
His parents, Thomas and Elizabeth, owned a small farm near Bradford , West Yorkshire . John was a trained spinner , but was interested in spinning machines . He worked for the Charlton Twist Company in Manchester and emigrated to Hamburg in 1799 , where he set up a small cotton mill for the merchant George Christoph Hansen . In 1801 he was engaged by Karl Kolbielski for a consortium of banks, high nobility and wholesalers to build a large cotton mill. In Pottendorf Thornton managed the cotton mill from 1802 to 1843 , in which he had a 25% share.
His brother Jonathan Thornton (1776–1847) was the owner of the Ebenfurth cotton spinning mill.
