Hans Weinreich († 1559 or 1560 in Königsberg , Duchy of Prussia ) was a German printer in Danzig and Königsberg in Prussia.

Life

He probably came from Danzig in Polish Prussia . The first prints by him from 1520 have been preserved in the city, including a writing by Martin Luther . Because of a mocking poem against the Polish King Sigismund I during the war with the Teutonic Order , he was arrested by the city council and released in March 1522. In 1524 his last print appeared in Danzig.

Since that year he had a printer in Königsberg, probably at Duke Albrecht's request. He was the city's first printer. Weinreich supported the Reformation movement in Prussia. More than 100 titles are known from his time in Königsberg, mostly in German , but also in Latin , Polish , Hebrew , Prussian and Lithuanian . In 1549 two new printing plants were opened in the city, which were technically superior to him and which considerably restricted his activities. Since that time, for example, there have been no more Polish prints from his shop . In 1553 his last prints appeared in Königsberg.

From 1555, titles of his from Danzig are known, where he had apparently returned. In 1558 he was back in Königsberg, where he died between July 1559 and July 1560.
