Johann Wolthus von Herse

Johann Wolthus von Herse (also Waldhaus von Heerse ; †  1471 or 1472 ) was Landmeister in Livonia of the Teutonic Order from 1470 until his fall in 1471 .

Life

Johann Wolthus von Herse came from the county of Mark . In 1451 he was a companion in Soneburg and before 1459 presumably Landvogt von Karkus . From 1459 to 1463 he was Vogt of Narwa , 1466 to 1468 Commander of Marienburg (now Alūksne ) and 1468 to 1470 Commander of Reval (now Tallinn). In 1470 he was elected landmaster.

During his tenure as Landmeister, the Ordensburg Tolsburg (also Vredeborch , today Toolse ) in the north of Estonia and the bailiwick of the same name were founded. He was also possibly planning an alliance between Livonia and Novgorod directed against the Grand Duchy of Moscow .

Johann Wolthus von Herse tried to reform the internal order of the Livonian branch of the order in order to be able to better counter a military threat, especially from the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Own claim to power may also have played a role. He consistently overlooked the general chapter of the order, which led to tensions. From September 1471 he had gained great power for foreign policy steps, which were also aimed against Lithuania , with which the order was in border disputes. A short time later, however, Johann Wolthus von Herse was overthrown by an opposition group around Bernd von der Borch and arrested in autumn 1471. It is possible that the 1472 was murdered in captivity.
