Johann von Glogau
Johann von Glogau (Latin Johannes Glogoviensis , also Joannis Glogouiensis ; Polish Jan z Głogowa , also Jan Głogowczyk ; * around 1445 in Glogau , Duchy of Glogau ; † February 11, 1507 in Cracow ) was a philosopher and mathematician .
Live and act
Johann von Glogau was a student and professor at the Cracow Academy (Jagiellonian University since 1817). In the Polish language, into which he has translated several books of the Bible, he is called Jan z Głogowa or Jan Głogowczyk , among others , but many different forms of name are known, including Johann von Schelling von Glogau .
The year of his birth (1415 to 1445) is unclear, as is the time when he obtained his master's degree in 1430 or 1468. He was so successful as a teacher of philosophy and mathematics in Krakow that the academy took off through him. With large donations he also built a Konvikt for his students, who from 1491 presumably also included Nicolaus Copernicus .
He wrote an explanatory edition of Donatus and commentaries on almost all of Aristotle's writings . He represented an eclecticism of the so-called old and new logic .
The earliest Practica , astronomical forecast brochures, in German have been handed down by him from 1476 onwards .
