Johanna (Jenny) Fischer: self-portrait around 1840

Johanna Fischer , also Jenny Fischer and Jeny Fischer (born May 4, 1820 in Vienna ; died April 20, 1888 there ), married Johanna Edle von Strobach , was an Austrian painter of the Viennese Biedermeier .

Life

According to a private family chronicle, Johanna Fischer was born in Vienna IX, in the Alservorstadt barracks on May 4, 1820. She was the daughter of Dr. med. Carl Michael Fischer, regimental physician and his wife Theresia, b. Meinong from Handschuchsheim. On August 9, 1847 she married Friedrich Edlen von Strobach, who later became the Imperial and Royal Lieutenancy Council, and they had four children with him. On April 20, 1888, she died in the General Hospital , Alser Strasse 4, in Vienna. Her grave is in Vienna at the Hernalser Friedhof .

Johanna Fischer's still lifes and portraits are primarily known. From 1840 she took part in the academy exhibitions at St. Anna , where she exhibited pictures of flowers, pieces of fruit and portraits alongside artists such as Franz Eybl , Joseph Nigg , Franz Xaver Petter (cf.). “In addition to Johanna Fischer, she also signed with Jeny Fischer. It is probable that [...] she was a student in Waldmüller's private class , because as a woman she was not admitted to regular studies at the academy and her style was clearly based on Waldmüller's.
