Life

Franz Xaver Petter was the son of a porcelain painter . He was supposed to pursue the same profession as his father, but soon became more interested in oil painting . He studied at the Vienna Academy with Johann Baptist Drechsler and with his successor at the Manufactory Drawing School Sebastian Wegmayr . After his death, Petter was buried in the Dornbach cemetery . In 1932 the Franz-Petter-Gasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.

meaning

Franz Xaver Petter, who from 1816 exhibited regularly at art exhibitions at the academy and then at the Austrian Art Association , was one of the most important flower still life painters of the Biedermeier period in Vienna. The nature of his flower depictions goes back to his teacher Drechsler, and through him to the art of the Dutch of the 17th century. Later he also designed small-format pieces of fruit and, at the end of his life, flowers against a landscape background . Petter's pictures were very popular with the nobility and bourgeoisie.
