Johanna Nestor

Johanna Nestor (born November 24, 1917 in Mukatschewo , Bereg County , Austria-Hungary as Johanna "Hanna" Müller ; † October 11, 2012 ) was an Austrian ambassador . As one of the very first ambassadors of the country, she was considered a pioneer of modern diplomacy in Austria.

Life

Johanna Nestor studied law and received her doctorate in law from the University of Vienna . She was the first female Austrian ambassador to graduate from the Consular Academy ( Diplomatic Academy Vienna since 1964 ) from 1935 to 1937, among others with Otto Eiselsberg .

Nestor entered the service of the Austrian Foreign Office on October 1, 1947. She later worked in Section IV of the Austrian Federal Chancellery and as Austrian Consul General in New York. Nestor was ambassador of the Republic of Austria in New Delhi, India (1966–1970), in Tel Aviv, Israel (1972–1976) and in Dublin, Ireland (1979–1982).

In 2007 the book Israel and the Middle East Conflict 1972–1976 was published . Nestor described the 101 reports she received, which she wrote to the Vienna Foreign Ministry from 1972 to 1976.

In honor of Nestor as a graduate of the predecessor institution of the Diplomatic Academy Vienna, the Consular Academy, and as one of the first women to hold high offices in Austrian foreign policy, the students of the 48th diploma course at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna (academic year 2011/12) named their class after Johanna Nestor.

Johanna Nestor was Komturdame ( Grand Officer ) of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
