Kepler's house in Linz

The listed Johannes Kepler residential building at Rathausgasse 5 in Linz is used as an education center under the name Kepler Salon . The building to the east of Linz's main square is named after the astronomer Johannes Kepler , who lived here with his family from 1622 to 1626.

history

The house was mentioned in a document in 1549 and was owned by the Linz citizen Altenstraßer from before 1616 and until after 1630. Johannes Kepler , who lived with his family from 1613 to 1620 in Freihaus Hohenfeld, today Hofgasse 7, moved in 1622 with his family to the so-called "Altenstrasse dwelling", where he completed his main work, the "Rudolphinische Tafeln".

From 1769 there was a printing shop in the house. In 1871 the Katholische Pressverein , a book and newspaper publisher in Linz, bought the building and its printing plant for 3,200 guilders in order to print the Volksblatt there.

In 2008 the house was renovated and an event room was set up on the first floor as the "Kepler Salon".

building

The late medieval building was built in the 15th century to the 1st third of the 16th century. Renovations in the Renaissance style were carried out in the second half of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century with an increase in the level with the flat bay window and the courtyard arcades. The building was baroque in the 17th and 18th centuries and the former back courtyard was built over. Further redesigns took place in the first third of the 19th century, including the Biedermeier walling of the bay window. On the side of the house at Rathausgasse 3 there is a small courtyard with a Schwibbogen . The oriel room on the 1st floor has a mighty wooden beam ceiling from the 16th century and a barn on the courtyard side, the windows are in deep segmented arched niches.

The Kepler Salon

The Kepler Salon is an educational institution for teaching science to a wide audience. With free admission, an attempt is made to create a connection between the public and science by conveying knowledge and current research results in an informative and entertaining way. Universities, educational institutions, hospitals and numerous cooperation partners make research accessible and understandable in dialogue with experts. The Kepler Salon was opened in 2009 as part of the cultural capital year Linz09 as a showcase for science, with a lecture by the mathematician Rudolf Taschner . The interior design by Thomas Aschenbrenner makes it possible that - in contrast to frontal presentations - speakers and listeners meet at eye level.

The astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, along with Galileo and Newton, is one of the most important founders and representatives of the natural sciences and acts as patron and name giver for the Kepler Salon. Due to the great public interest, the project could be continued beyond the Capital of Culture year and is now supported by the association "Kepler Salon - Association for the Promotion of Knowledge Transfer", which is financially supported by the association "Freunde Kepler Salon" as well as by public and private sponsors.

Events

The weekly program includes short lectures, knowledge exchanges, disputes with experts as well as readings and public experiments in the fields of nature and technology, medicine, humanities, cultural studies and art studies. In 2009, 118 events with 156 speakers were offered. Guests were u. a. Rudolf Taschner , Helga Kromp-Kolb , Anna Mitgutsch , Thomas Mohrs , Anton Pelinka , Regina Becker-Schmidt , Sissel Tolaas , Barbara Frischmuth , Adolf Holl and Heinz Oberhummer .
