Johannes Dreßler

Johannes Dreßler (born August 26, 1924 in Reichenbach im Vogtland ; † March 12, 2019 in Aue ) was a German Protestant theologian , long-time General Secretary of the "Evangelical-Church Gnadauer Community Work in the GDR" and author.

Live and act

Johannes Dreßler grew up in Vogtland and attended elementary school between 1930 and 1938. This was followed by the commercial school until 1941 . From 1942 he was a soldier in World War II and then interned in various POW camps until 1947. After a year as a commercial clerk, he studied Protestant theology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin from 1948 to 1951 . During an internship in Berlin-Mahlsdorf , he met his future wife. Until 1954 he worked as a pastor in Greiz and until 1976 in the regional association of regional church communities in Saxony in Auerbach / Vogtl. with special tasks: child, youth, lay work, as a lecturer for preachers. During this time he completed an additional degree in group work . Between 1977 and 1989 he was general secretary of the association “Evangelical-Church Gnadauer Gemeinschaftwerk in der DDR e. V. “, which was merged in 1991 in the Evangelical Gnadauer Community Association. During this time he played a key role in shaping the community movement in the GDR and established contacts with the Scandinavian pietist movements.

From 1989 to 2011 Dreßler held various full-time and honorary tasks in the Evangelical Diakonie of the EKD . One focus of his work had been publications, such as the Bible reading for children “On Eternal Sources” and the youth Bible reading “Light rays”. In 2018 his memoirs appeared in two volumes under the title "90 plus". He was married to the fashion designer Ruth Estha from 1951 and had three children with her, including his son Matthias, inspector of the Saxon Community Association.

Awards

In 2006 Dreßler received the Golden Crown Cross of the Diakonie for his full-time and voluntary work in the Protestant hospital "Gottesfriede" in Woltersdorf near Berlin, where he was active in pastoral care and patient care.
