Johannes Gaye

Johannes Wilhelm Gaye (born November 8, 1804 in Tönning ; † August 26, 1840 in Florence ) was a German art historian.

Johannes Gaye studied philosophy , history and art history at the universities of Kiel and Berlin and went to Italy in 1830, where he spent ten years in Rome , Florence, Siena , Bologna , Mantua , interrupted only by a trip to Greece (1832) , Venice and southern Italy worked in archives and libraries to collect documents for the history of Italian art.

He combined the results of his fundamental research in the Carteggio inedito d'artisti dei secoli (XIV., XV., XVI.) Publiccato ed illustrato con documenti pure inediti dal dott. Giovanni Gaye con fac-simile (Florence 1840, 3 vols.). He also published numerous articles in the Kunstblatt . He died in Florence on August 26, 1840.
