Johannes Gelenius

Johannes Gelenius (born October 17, 1585 in Kempen , † April 30, 1631 in Cologne ) was a Cologne historiographer and clergyman from the 17th century. After his ordination in 1610, he rose rapidly in the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In 1612 he was dean of the philosophical faculty, in 1618 also dean of the theological faculty. From 1621 he belonged to the Cologne cathedral chapter . In 1627 he became vicar general of the spiritual elector and archbishop of Cologne Ferdinand of Bavaria .

The Cologne historiographer Aegidius Gelenius (1595–1656) was his brother. His best-known work is the book published in Cologne in 1645, “Of the admirable, holy and bourgeois greatness of Cologne” (De admiranda sacra et civili magnitudine Coloniae).
