Johannes Georg Brock
Johannes Georg Brock (born January 16, 1852 in Berlin , † February 20, 1889 in Göttingen ) was a German zoologist and anatomist .
Life
From 1869 to 1875 Brock studied medicine and zoology in Berlin, Würzburg, Freiburg and again in Berlin, where he received his doctorate with the dissertation on the pathology and therapy of uterine flexions . From 1877 to 1881 he was an assistant at the zoological institute of the University of Erlangen and from 1879 to 1881 he was a private lecturer at the University of Erlangen. From 1881 to January 1889 he was a private lecturer at the University of Göttingen .
In 1884 he completed an expedition to Indonesia, where he mainly collected in the bay of Batavia (now Jakarta ) and on Ambon . In 1885 Brock returned to Germany with a huge yield of 260 species of crab , lobster and shrimp . He sent this collection to Johannes Govertus de Man , curator at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Naturalis ). 37 species were found to be new to science in subsequent studies.
On October 23, 1887, Johannes Brock was accepted into the Leopoldina . At the end of 1888 he was appointed professor of histology , embryology and comparative anatomy at the University of Dorpat (now Tartu ). However, he died in Göttingen in February 1889 of complications from a bilateral pneumonia just before he could take up his duties. His funeral took place in Berlin.
On August 30, 1889, his son Erich Brock (1889–1976), who later became a well-known philosopher, writer and publicist, was born in London .
