Johannes Hauchin (also Joannes or Jean ; * 1527 in Geraardsbergen , † January 5, 1589 in Mechelen ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and bishop .

Life

Hauchin studied philosophy at the University of Leuven and theology at the universities of Dole and Douai . At the latter he obtained a licentiate in theology. In 1561 he became a canon at St. Hermes in Ronse . In 1568 he became dean of the chapter and the local dean's office. Under his leadership, the restoration of the church after the iconoclasm of the Reformation began.

In 1570 Hauchin was appointed canon at the chapter of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, and one year later he was appointed Dean of the Chapter . In 1578 he was appointed Archdeacon of Brussels and Vicar General . In 1579/1580 he came into conflict with the Calvinist city ​​leadership and was arrested. Released from custody, he left the city. He went to Tournai and to Douai University, where he defended his theological dissertation .

On January 24, 1583, Hauchin was appointed Archbishop of Mechelen by King Philip II of Spain . He received his episcopal ordination on October 30 of the same year in Tournai , but was not able to take over his Archdiocese, which was occupied by Calvinists, until 1585. During his tenure he was busy with the restoration of the looted cathedral of Mechlin and published the Pastorale Mechliniense in 1588 , which he had printed in Antwerp. This was a manual of the liturgical rites to be cultivated in the ecclesiastical province.

The Archbishop, who died in 1589, was buried in the Mechelen Cathedral.
