Johannes I. Pfefferhard

Johannes I. Pfefferhard (* before 1300; † 23 May 1331 ) was Bishop of Chur from 1325 to 1331 .

Life

Johannes came from a wealthy Constance patrician family. His brother Ulrich Pfefferhard was Bishop of Constance . He studied in Bologna . Johannes was lord of the church in Steffisburg , canon in Chur and Constance, provost of Würzburg. In the disputes between Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian and the Pope, he was on the papal side. He was elected Bishop of Chur in 1325. On the return journey from Avignon , where he was ordained bishop before September 18, 1330, the barons of Grünenberg attacked him and kept him prisoner in a castle "Tüfelsruggen", which cannot be located. He died in captivity and was buried in Binzen .
