Johannes Keuchenthal

Johannes Keuchenthal (also: Kochenthal, Küchenthäler ; * around 1522 in Ellrich ; † 1583 in Sankt Andreasberg ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Nothing is known about Keuchenthal's career. What is certain is that he was the first evangelical preacher to become a preacher in St Andreasberg as early as 1552. His ancestors are said to come from the Swabian Kochertal . He himself had married the daughter of a councilor from Ellrich, Christiane Becker, who died of the plague in 1577. His two youngest sons also died in that plague epidemic, and he himself was subjected to physical decline from that point on. That is why in 1578 the school rector of St. Andreasberg was sent to him to cope with his official duties as a deacon, who also became his official successor.

Although in the Evangelical Hymnal (EG 29) the song "Den die Hirten praise sehre" is occasionally his name, this song has nothing to do with him. Keuchenthal has dealt with Protestant songs, but the melody comes from the Moosburger Graduale (1354-1360) and the text was first translated into German in Georg Rhau's hymn book . Rather, Keuchenthal gained importance through the compilation of the richest and most complete collections of church chants published in 1573. For this he used the hymns of Joseph Klug , Valentin Bapst and the Bohemian brothers, among others . He also drew on the collection of Johann Spangenberg , the Psalmodia by Lucas Lossius and other authors.
