Johannes Komnenos (Domestikos der Scholen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Komnenos ( medium Greek Ἰωάννης Κομνηνός * to 1015; † 12. July 1067 in Constantinople Opel ) was a Byzantine aristocrat of the family of Komnenen who under Emperor Isaac I. as domestikos of Scholen officiated.

Life

Johannes Komnenos was the younger brother of the later Emperor Isaac I. Orphaned after the death of their father Manuel Komnenos Erotikos , the two Komnenes were educated in the studio monastery in Constantinople on the orders of Basil II . Since 1044 Johannes was married to Anna Dalassene . The couple had five sons Manuel († 1070), Isaak , the later Emperor Alexios , Adrianos and Nikephoros and the three daughters Maria, Eudokia and Theodora.

When he came to power in 1057, Isaac I granted John the high court dignity of Nobelissimo and Kuropalate and appointed him Domestikos (or Dux , i.e. commander in chief) of the Byzantine troops in the west . When the seriously ill emperor decided to abdicate on December 25, 1059 , he initially offered his brother to succeed him. However, Johannes renounced the crown, much to the annoyance of his wife, who severely reprimanded him for it and - ultimately in vain - tried to change his mind. In his place, on the advice of Michael Psellos, the elderly Senate Chairman Konstantin Dukas ascended the throne of Constantinople.

Johannes Komnenos died on July 12, 1067 as a monk in the studio monastery. His widow Anna Dalassene remained an influential figure in Byzantine politics; In 1081 she was instrumental in the successful usurpation of her son Alexios against Nikephorus III. involved.
