Johannes Kornow

Johannes Kornow (born February 17, 1932 in Schwedt / Oder ; † January 31, 2014 in Greifswald ) was a German archivist .

Life

He was the son of a farm laborer. After attending primary school, he learned the trade of a locksmith. He joined the SED , whose local party leadership in Schwedt recommended that he attend high school. There he passed his Abitur in 1951 and was appointed head of the art department at the Schwedt District Council. He then took up studies at the Pädagogische Hochschule Potsdam and then went to the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he graduated as a qualified archivist in 1957 at the Institute for Archival Science.

At the German Central Archives , Merseburg Department , he received his first position as a scientific archivist of the higher service, where he organized the archives of the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, Domains and Forests. Only a few years later he was appointed to the State Archives Administration of the GDR, where he was involved in the development of a system for training and qualifying employees in the state archives. He became a member of the SED party leadership of the archive administration and headed the base of the district propagandists active.

In the late 1960s he was appointed director of the Greifswald State Archives, which in 1990 became the Vorpommersche Landesarchiv . In 1974 he received his doctorate at the University of Greifswald with a dissertation on the working class and state power in the process of the anti-fascist-democratic upheaval in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania from May 1945 to the constitution of the organs of power elected in autumn 1945 .

Between 1976 and 1988 he published the multi-volume store of knowledge for the subject of the history of the political organization of society - part of capitalism as teaching material. As early as 1959 he had compiled the teaching letter on Brandenburg-Prussian administrative history.
