Johannes Peter Lange (born February 17, 1867 in Hostrup, Havetoft parish ; † February 27, 1953 in Klein-Brodersby ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor and Lauenburg (regional) superintendent from 1914 to 1944.

Live and act

After his ordination in 1894, Lange was initially a vicar in Wandsbek . Two years later he was also pastor in Wandsbek and in 1901 chief pastor.

In 1914 he moved to Ratzeburg as main pastor , where he was appointed superintendent in the same year, on May 3, 1914, as the successor to the late Theodor Valentiner . With the entry into force of the constitution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schleswig-Holstein from September 30, 1922 to November 1, 1924, he received the title of state superintendent . He held this position well beyond the normal retirement age until his retirement on April 1, 1944.

In the years 1933–1944, Lange kept a critical distance from the National Socialist regime and was close to the Confessing Church . So he made sure that on March 20, 1937 the “ Möllner emergency confirmation ” of Lübeck confirmands could take place, whose pastors belonging to the Confessing Church had been placed under house arrest. In addition , on November 6, 1938 , he ordained 22 candidates for preaching office of the Confessing Church in the St. Petri Church in Ratzeburg.

On the occasion of his 25th anniversary in office in 1939, the Lauenburg pastors established the “Johannes Lange Foundation”, the proceeds of which were intended to promote church life in the parishes of the Lauenburg state superintendent .
